STEP 4 guidance (from Monday the 19th of July 2021) 

Following on from the Government's announcement, please see below our guidance within the Leisure Centres. 

Face coverings for customers 

We strongly encourage you to continue to use face masks whilst circulating our sites. 

The use of face masks will be required at our indoor events and whilst spectating on poolside. 

Bookings for activities

We still encourage you to continue to book online via our Leisure Focus App/Website for all your leisure activities

Social distancing 

2m or 1m+ is no longer a requirement, but please be considerate of all our users and where possible maintain good social distancing

One way systems 

Where possible, we will continue to provide these as optional controls to prevent pinch points and crowding. 

Capacity control 

All remaining limits on social contact (currently 6 people or 2 households indoors, or 30 people outdoors) are removed and there will be no more restrictions on how many people can meet in any setting, indoors or outdoors. We will provide a phased approach to spacing of equipment in use across the gyms.

Summary of changes: 

Gyms can increase capacities. We will introduce a phased reintroduction of equipment. 

Classes can return to pre COVID capacity with additional classes added at certain sites. We will have a phased approach to some classes with some having a reduced capacity and increased spacing.

The majority of fitness classes will also return back to the studios

Sauna and steam rooms. We will introduce a phased approach to capacities, still advised to book your space. 

Public swimming can return to pre COVID capacity 

Swimming lessons can return to pre COVID capacity. 

Catering can return to pre COVID capacity with no restrictions on service.. 

Events/shows/weddings can return to pre COVID capacity 

Bookings systems: 

Web & App booking systems will be updated to allow revised capacities.

We welcome casual/walk-up use. Booking start times will remain for the gym but are not mandatory.

Walk-ins are accepted but you are encouraged to book to avoid additional queues at reception. 

Booking will be retained for lane swimming. 


Our sites will maintain enhanced ventilation levels.

Track and Trace 

We will continue to display QR codes for customers to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app, to support NHS Test and Trace.

Self isolation/close contacts 

Persons testing positive for COVID19 will still be required to self-isolate 

Until at least the end of September, self-isolation enforcement and support will otherwise continue as it is now. 

Signs and notices 

Please adhere to COVID signage throughout our sites: 

Hand sanitisers 

Please continue to sanitise or wash your hands regularly. We will continue with enhanced cleaning of all high contact points

Target spray

We will continue to target spray the sites. 

Gym and fitness equipment cleaning 

We will continue to provide cleaning equipment, so please do continue to sanitise equipment after use. Thank you.

Reception and till Screens 

Will stay in place at reception and till points for the comfort of staff and customers.

Food and beverage 

Seating areas will be reintroduced on a phased basis, with some socially distanced tables 

Changing Rooms 

Changing rooms to revert to normal operation, but continuation of coming swim ready in swimming lessons to be encouraged, particularly where changing room capacity is limited.
